How to Write a Great a Biomedical Equipment Technician Resume that Gets Interviews

You’re trained to troubleshoot and fix a number of medical machines, and it’s not like you can take your time doing it either. Working on equipment that’s reserved months in advance and helps save lives is no checking of boxes on routine maintenance.

While you’re an expert in all things technical, your Biomedical Equipment Technician expertise is not helping you write a resume to land you the BMET job you desire.

Not to worry, we’re here to help.

Leet Resumes has created a step-by-step guide as simple as an equipment inspection checklist.

In this article, you’ll find:

  • A resume template with detailed instructions for each section
  • A resume example specifically for a Biomedical Equipment Technician
  • Helpful tips on how to write a resume that stands out from the rest and lands you more interviews and job offers.

Prefer to have someone else write your Biomedical Equipment Technician resume?

If you’d rather stick to the technical work, Leet Resumes will do the resume writing for you. Better yet, they’ll do it for free (though tips are always appreciated).

How to Format a Biomedical Equipment Technician Resume

Here are the five sections for your BMET Resume:

  • Professional Headline
  • Professional Summary
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Keywords

As you’ll find in the resume example, the best format is minimalist and simple. For people who read resumes all day, they just want to find the facts quickly to decide if you’re a good fit for their organization.

If equipment manuals were filled with colorful designs, creative columns and fancy fonts, it would be a distraction to finding the information you need. So would hiding technical directions in paragraphs rather than systemized lists.

The same rules apply to your resume. Use the single-column, streamlined format of the resume example above, and list all the relevant information of your career in lists and bullet points – absolutely no paragraphs.

Name + Contact

Start with your full name at the top center of the page. Choose a professional and legible font and make it slightly larger than the rest of the text.

Underneath, add your contact information: phone number, professional email address and location (just city and state will do).

Leave out any social networking sites including LinkedIn (unless InMail is your preferred mode of communication). The goal is to make it as easy as possible to find your contact information and request an interview: the fewer variables, the greater chance of success.

Professional Headline

If your resume is an advertisement of why you’d make a great hire, your professional headline is the attention-getting hook to make them want to learn more.

Start with a flattering adjective that puts you and your work in a positive light – something like: thorough, methodical, problem-solving, or innovative.

Then add a word that describes your level of experience: lead, supervising, senior, junior, assistant, etc.

Finally, add your official Biomedical Equipment Technician job title.

When you’re done, you should have something like this:

Strategic Senior Biomedical Equipment Technician.

Now you try!

Professional Summary

Now that you’ve hooked them with your three to five word headline, it’s time to start listing all the reasons why you’re the Biomedical Equipment Technician for their open position.

This section will be highly targeted to each specific role you apply for, so consider this to be a resume template to be customized later.

In the first line, list all the job titles you’d accept for your next role: Biomedical Equipment Specialist, Medical Instrument Technician, Radiology Equipment Servicer, etc.

Most importantly, list the exact job title for the position you’re applying to.

In the second line, add the skills and professional experience that qualify you for this specific role.

In a specific department role, this might include specialized equipment you’re familiar with. For a more general role, you might include your networking capabilities and familiarization with equipment departments (diagnostics, imaging, respiratory, etc.).

For inspiration of which of your many skills to list here, refer to the description in the original job listing. They’ll typically outline the qualifications and duties required so you can highlight which of these you already have.

The third and fourth lines are optional, and for Biomedical Equipment Technicians just starting out, it’s likely that you’ll stick to the first two lines. Not to worry, that’s plenty to land you an interview.

If you have the experience and accolades, list your career achievements in line three (designed systems, total number of trainees, noteworthy accomplishments), and in line four, list the awards and promotions you’ve received.

Need a break?

Before we dive into the next section of this resume template, it’s not too late to hand this off to the experts. For no cost at all, you can have a Biomedical Equipment Technician resume written for you (tips are always appreciated).

Work Experience

Medical device management isn’t just about maintenance and troubleshooting, there’s a lot of record keeping involved. For this section of your resume template, you’ll apply the same attention to detail and accuracy to give a full report of your history as a Biomedical Equipment Technician.

Start by listing your previous professional positions in reverse chronological order.

Add the accurate dates of employment, previous employer and exact job title you held.

Under each position, you’ll add bullet points of the results you brought to the organization in that role, such as:

Mentored 8 BMETs with training in repair and calibration for 11 types of diagnostic medical equipment. Advised 50+ hospital staff on theory of operation and application best practices for 16 Cardiac Diagnostic Machines. Optimized diagnostic imaging retrieval by integrating HTM departments into 1 system, boosting efficiency by 20%.

Notice how these bullet points aren’t a boring recollection of your daily duties and responsibilities, but snapshots of your success in each role.

Here’s how to stand out from the other candidates and land an interview through the bullet points of your work experience:

Start every bullet point with a strong success verb.

These are verbs like optimized, boosted, increased, advanced or solved. Instead of taking up space with passive verbs like managed, performed or operated, highlight the success of your actions before you even get to the details.

Add as many numbers as possible.

You’re in the field of science. Science relies on data, and on your resume, numbers are the measurable data that turns this section from a subjective history of your experience into a detailed account of how your BMET expertise equals success for whichever organization you work for.

Find numbers in the equipment managed, team members trained, size of departments, equipment in network, generated reports and general workload of regular maintenance. Each number you include gives a clear visual of your success and makes you a more attractive candidate for the BMET position.

Include every promotion you’ve received.

Promotions highlight your success from an outside party and validates your previous number claims. Since promotions are neither common nor mandatory, each promotion you include shows a potential employer that your work is worth rewarding and you’re an employee people want to keep around.

Education

This section includes four items:

  • Where you attended school
  • Dates of attendance
  • Degree(s) obtained
  • Honors or awards received

Unless you were president of the biomedical equipment club, all extracurricular activities can be left off your resume.

As for specialized certifications outside of your college career, those will be included in the next section.

Keywords and Skills for a Biomedical Equipment Technician Resume

Depending on the medical institution, size of the organization and specific role you’re applying to, the keywords and skills of your resume will be tailored and adjusted to address the specific needs of each potential employer.

If you’re applying for a supervising BMET role for the HTM department, your leadership, capitol asset planning and thorough expertise for training should be the emphasis of the skills you list here.

For a departmental Biomedical Equipment Technician role at a diagnostic imaging center, you can get more granular with the specific equipment and technologies you’ll be expected to maintain.
