How to Write a Computer Engineer Resume that Gets Interviews

Software, hardware, malware…you’ve got it. But with a host of languages, methodologies and testing tools, which ones do you include in a resume? Do you focus on hardware or software? Which containerization are they using?

When you set out in CompE, it wasn’t to sit in Word and try to write a resume. But here you are, trying to get back to exploring computers and getting paid for it and this single piece of paper is in your way.

Luckily, you’ve landed in the right place.

This article will give you the framework to build a custom resume template that lands you in the Computer Engineering job of your dreams.

Why a resume template?

Sure, we could walk you through step-by-step how to build a standard Computer Engineer resume, but that’s not the resume that will get you more interviews.

It all comes down to Requirement Analysis: understand what your potential employer is looking for and craft a resume that shows them you can meet their needs and expectations.

With this guide, you’ll create a complete resume model that can be tweaked for each job you apply to. Much of it will remain the same from application to application, but making slight adjustments to tailor your resume toward each job listing will make for a more efficient job search overall.

Along the way you can reference the Computer Engineer resume example to double check your content and formatting.

By the end of this article, you’ll have a completed resume template for getting more interviews and job offers.

Prefer to have someone else write your resume?

That’s an option, too. The experts behind this resume guide will write a custom Computer Engineer resume for you. And they’ll do it for free (seriously). Though tips are always appreciated.

How to Structure a Computer Engineer Resume

First and foremost, let’s talk about framework. Your resume has five essential elements:

  • Professional Headline
  • Summary
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Keywords

Each section is designed to guide the reader toward the decision of requesting an interview.

That doesn’t require any complex formatting or multiple columns. The streamlined single-column structure you see in the resume example is the simplest path to get there.

Name + Contact

At the top center of the page, add your first and last name. Use a font that’s professional and legible and make the text a few points larger than the rest of the resume.

Directly underneath, add your contact information: phone number, email address and location (city and state).

Your full mailing address isn’t necessary to include. If your future employer wants to contact you by mail for an interview, they need more help than just a Computer Engineer. Your city and state lets them know you’re around and relevant to the hiring conversation.

Make sure your email address is professional. Not funny, not clever and not difficult to read or spell.

Professional Headline

Think of this headline as your professional status. If your resume landed on anyone’s desk, they should know exactly what you do and have an idea of who you are.

Start with an adjective that describes you and your engineering work: diligent, thorough, methodical, strategic, innovative, etc.

Then add your professional title, your specialization (if it’s relevant) and a word that acknowledges your level of experience, like: lead, junior, or assistant.

Put together, it should look something like this:

Professional Junior Computer Hardware Engineer

Or:

Strategic Senior Software Engineer

Professional Summary

Now that you’ve captured their attention with your headline, your professional summary is where your UX focus will come into play and make the recruiter feel like you’re the perfect Computer Engineer for the job.

Start by listing the job titles you’d accept for your next position. Include different specialities, engineering focuses and titles with ranks adjacent to yours. Most importantly, add the exact job title of the position you’re targeting.

In the second line, list the skills and capabilities that qualify you for these roles.

Use the listed qualifications and responsibilities in the job listing to tailor this selection for each job you apply for.

If the Computer Engineer position is mostly mobile, highlight your UX/UI skills and C#.

If they’re data-oriented, focus on SQL, AWS and ETLs.

Whatever you can’t fit here will be listed in the keywords section at the end of your resume. So just focus on what the user (recruiter) wants to see.

The next two lines are optional and most Computer Engineers stick with the first two.

However, if you have the work to furnish the next two lines, add your career achievements in line three and your awards and promotions in line four.

These could be things like notable projects you worked on, highlights of your work experience or programs you authored.

Again, this is optional. It’s better to have two strong lines to convince your recruiter to call you for an interview rather than four mediocre lines that feel like you’re reaching.

Need a break?

That was a fun detour to the front-end, but if writing a resume isn’t your thing, have Leet Resumes write it for you. They’ll craft a professional custom resume for you…for free.

Work Experience

You can think of your work experience section like the highlight reel of your engineering success. This is not the place to list your duties and responsibilities like you’re writing a programming manual.

Instead of focusing on the engineering process, you’ll showcase the results your engineering brings to the company. Here’s how:

Start by listing your previous work experience in reverse chronological order. Add the accurate dates of employment, job title and previous employer (take a look at the resume example to see how this is formatted).

Under each position, add a bulleted list of how you added value to the company using this formula:

Strong Success Verb + Measurable Data (Numbers) + Positive End Result

For example:

  • Improved Service Request efficiency by 23% by formulating ML prioritization system
  • Trained and led a team of 6 Computer Engineers to handle 300+ support requests monthly
  • Boosted page speed by 13% by optimizing on-page code, increasing conversions by 42%

Success Verbs are actions like maximized, optimized, exceeded, enhanced or resolved. They replace tepid actions like managed, performed or “was responsible for,” and give the reader an idea of your success before you share the details.

Numbers are specific data points that can help anyone see the measurable results of your work. Whether it’s the lead software engineer or the HR assistant scanning your resume, numbers make it clear that your work contributes to the overall success of the company. Since only a handful of people at the organization could probably understand the logic and methods of how you delivered those results, use as many numbers as possible so anyone can understand that you’re good at what you do.

Add every promotion. Each promotion you receive takes the pressure off you to show that you’re a Computer Engineer worth hiring by having someone else say the same thing. Promotions show how successful you are since they’re not mandatory or common. Add every promotion you’ve received to show the successful arc of your engineering career.

Education

To provide context to your career and accomplishments, simply list where you went to school, the years of your attendance, the degrees you graduated with and any honors or awards you received.

No need to elaborate with extracurriculars or the abandoned degrees before you discovered Computer Engineering. Simple and brief is all you need.

A Computer Engineer’s Resume Skills

At the very end of your resume template is a place to list all the skills, languages and technologies that pertain to the job you’re applying for, like:

Skills to address the exact needs of their job description:

  • UX/UI
  • Containerization / Orchestration
  • Docker / Kubernetes
  • ML Model Development
  • Deep Learning Frameworks
  • Test Design Patterns

Skills for solving their hardware and software problems:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Critical Thinking
  • Agile/Scrum
  • Software/Hardware Testing
  • Test Automation Tools

Skills that show you’ll also document and deliver the reports of your hands-on work:

  • Detail Oriented
  • Organized
  • Document Management
  • Capacity and Scalability Planning
  • [service reports]

Skills that show you’re professional and not the awkward Computer Engineer stereotype:

  • Team-Oriented
  • Collaboration

Excellent Written and Verbal Communication

Resume Technologies for Computer Engineers

In addition to your engineering skills, recruiters and hiring managers need to know your skills apply to their systems. In all likelihood, they don’t know the difference between CSS and C++, so include all the relevant technologies and platforms you work on, including the obvious ones.

  • Programming Languages: Java, C++, C#, HTML
  • Operating Systems: Android, Windows, Mac, Unix/ ux
  • Programs/Tools: AutoCAD, MATLAB, VHDL, Subversion, GIT, VIM, SQL
  • Hardware: VLSI, Circuit Boards, AMD
