Write a Tech Consultant Resume that Gets Interviews

Being a Tech Consultant is half suggesting new technologies and applications to improve operations, and half politely telling CEOs that you’re months ahead of whatever trend they’re reading about in WIRED.

While your technology knowledge reigns supreme, turns out your resume writing is still up for debate.

The good news is, you’ve found the best place to hone your resume skills and learn how to write a Tech Consultant resume that gets the kind of results you’re used to.

Prefer to have someone else write your resume?

That’s an option, too. The experts behind this resume example and guide will write your Tech Consultant resume for you. They’ll even do it for free. Try Leet Resumes and see the results yourself.

The Framework of a Tech Consultant Resume

Your resume has five parts:

  • Professional Headline
  • Professional Summary
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Keywords

In this article, we’ll show you the step-by-step action plan for writing an effective resume that lands more interviews and gets you that valuable facetime to win them over.

But first, let’s go over a few pointers

Simple is best.

The best UX is clean, simple and easy. Your resume should follow suit.

Forget about multiple colors, fonts or columns in your resume. The single-column format you see in the resume example has everything you need to showcase the leverage your tech savvy brings.

No paragraphs.

Whether it’s a computer scanner or a busy exec reading your resume, no one wants to read paragraphs about your career.

Use concise language, short phrases and single words to make the most of the brief time they’ll be scanning your resume.

Consider this a template.

Sure, we could help you write a stock resume designed for a Tech Consultant like yourself, but you know that consumers are all about customized experiences these days. The odds of you landing your dream job with a generic resume are slim.

So think of this as a resume template. We’ll go over what to include in each section, but we highly recommend that you customize each resume for every job you apply to.

Having second thoughts?

It’s not too late to have Leet Resumes write your resume for you. They’ll apply their expert knowledge so you can get back to applying yours.

Name + Contact

Start with your first and last name at the top of the page to make it clear who to call for an interview. Choose a font that’s simple and professional and make your name slightly larger than the rest of the text.

Underneath, add your contact information: phone number, email address and location.

No one needs to know your mailing address, or your LinkedIn account – unless your trend analysis says InMail is replacing email soon.

Professional Headline

This is your elevator pitch. You have three to five words to tell the reader who you are and what you do – without any of the facetime charm you apply in person.

Start with an adjective that describes you and your work ethic with a positive spin. Something like: results-oriented, performance-driven, innovative, strategic or economical would work here.

Follow that with your official title (Tech Consultant) and a word to acknowledge your level of experience, such as: expert, entry-level, junior, senior, etc.

Altogether, your professional headline might read: Performance-Driven Senior Tech Consultant.

Professional Summary

Once you’ve hooked your reader with your elevator pitch headline, use the two to four lines of your professional summary to attract interviews.

This section should be highly customized for your target audience. The more specific you are about how you’ll meet their needs as a Tech Consultant, the more likely you are to receive an interview request.

In the first line list all the job titles you’d accept for your next position. Most importantly, list the exact job title of the position you’re applying for. Maybe that includes Technology Consultant, Technical Advisor, or Technical Analyst.

These don’t need to be titles you’ve previously held, just jobs you’re qualified for and interested in.

In the second line, list the most relevant skills that qualify you for your targeted job.

This is where the resume template strategy comes into play. Your skills and expertise expand far beyond this single line in your professional summary. So choose this selection to include the skills you have that are listed in the job description.

Those are their pain points and you have the action plan to solve them. Make this immediately clear in the second line of your professional summary.

The third and fourth lines further highlight your experience and accomplishments, but they’re completely optional.

In the third line, list any notable achievements of your career: honorary titles, noteworthy companies and so forth. In line four, add any awards and promotions.

If nothing comes to mind for either of these, don’t worry about it. The first two lines are plenty to capture their attention and you can paint the greenfield for them in the next section.

Work Experience

Using the work experience section of your resume to list your daily duties and responsibilities is like spending half a presentation talking about the AV equipment you’re using to give the presentation. To put it bluntly: it’s a waste and no one cares.

Your work experience is white space. It’s an opportunity to highlight your accomplishments and achievements and get your potential employer excited about the ways you can replicate the same results for their company.

Start by listing your previous work experience in reverse chronological order. Refer to the resume template to see how to format your dates of employment, job title and previous employer.

Under each entry, add a bullet point list of how you made that company more successful as their Tech Consultant with these three elements:

Strong Success Verbs

Success verbs are the kinds of actions that imply the positive end result before you’ve shared the details.

It’s the difference between “managed” and “increased performance.” Or, “performed” and “enhanced.”

Every bullet point you include in your work history should start with a strong success verb.

Here are some more ideas for inspiration: generated, capitalized, boosted, accelerated, advanced, and optimized.

Numbers

There is no such thing as too many numbers in your resume. Numbers are the best way to help your future employer visualize how you’ll contribute to their company.

You can “boost revenue” and “optimize performance” all day long, but it’s not until you add hard numbers that those words come to life:

Boosted revenue by 18% by negotiating tech support contracts.

Optimized frontend performance to increase app speed by 30% and add an average of 15min of usage per visit.

Aim to have at least one number metric in each bullet point, but more than one per item is ideal.

Promotions

What’s more effective than highlighting your success stories? Having other people highlight your success by way of promotions.

Promotions are social proof that your work is worth rewarding and previous employers want to keep you around.

For someone looking to hire a Tech Consultant, promotions are a good sign that you can deliver the results you’ve mentioned. So include every promotion you’ve received in your work experience.

Education

Here you’ll list where you went to school, the dates you attended, the degrees you graduated with and any collegiate honors or awards you received.

As you see in the resume example, this section is brief. There’s no need to include your extracurricular activities or the degrees you never finished.

This section is just to provide context to your professional Tech Consultant career.

Keywords and Skills for a Tech Consultant Resume

In the final section of your resume, you’ll list all the skills, attributes, technologies and certifications that make you a great fit for the job you’re applying for.

This is an ideal place to customize your resume template for each job you’re applying to. In addition to the capabilities and technologies they list in the job description, add your own areas of expertise and personal strengths in tech consulting, like:

Soft Skills:

  • Presentations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Active Listening
  • Empathy
  • Creative Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Negotiation

Industry Skills & Knowledge:

  • Big Data
  • UX/UI
  • Agile Project Management
  • Predictive Modeling
  • Data Visualization
  • QA and UAT
  • Network Administration
  • Cybersecurity

Technologies:

  • Java/Python/R
  • MS Office 365
  • Apex
  • SQL
  • EY Technology

Once you’ve finished adding your final keywords, your Tech Consultant resume is officially complete. Well done.
