How to write the perfect data engineering resume

Data is the new oil, and, just like oil powered the industrial revolution, data powers the information revolution. Now that data is the linchpin of today’s economies, data engineers are some of the most sought after professionals.

Whether your specialty is building machine learning models in Python or developing data pipelines in the cloud, we know that you’ve put in a lot of time and hard work into building your current skill set. You’ve earned the right to a top-notch salary.

The first step to securing that high-paying job is writing a great resume. Writing that perfect resume, however, isn’t quite the same as normalizing a data set.

Take some time to look over data engineer resume examples and study some resume templates so that you can craft a resume that gives you the best shot at winning that dream job.

Good thing you’ve come to the right place. We’ve provided you with a perfect data engineering resume template so that you can hit the ground running.

What are you waiting for?

Ready to discover how you can write an A+ resume that’s guaranteed to win more job interviews?

Let’s get started.

How to write a data engineering resume that gets more interviews

Data engineers are in-demand in virtually every field. Want to work in finance? How about manufacturing? Or maybe you would prefer healthcare? Or, of course, there’s always tech.

There’s a potential job for you at virtually any company. Whether you want to work at a small tech startup or a multinational corporation, chances are, they need data engineers.

What you offer is critical to every business, and you deserve to work for a company that values your contributions, where you have the chance to work on interesting products, and, of course, where you earn a high salary.

This job won’t just appear out of thin air, though. You need to go after it.

The first step in that direction is a perfect data engineering resume.

Since it’s so important, you may want to consider letting an expert write it for you instead.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be expensive either.

When you work with Leet resumes, we’ll write your resume for free—no strings attached. We work solely for tips because we know that you’re going to love it.

Formatting a data engineer resume

Going to go it alone? Follow our resume template and look at our resume example and you can’t go wrong!

In a nutshell, all you have to do is follow this simple format:

  • Name + Contact
  • Professional Headline
  • Summary
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Keywords

That’s it. Use this resume template, and the interviews and job offers will start to flow.

Since you’re a data engineer, we know that you value organization and structure. After all, don’t you hate it when people use different formatting for the same fields?

The same thing is true for writing a resume. Stay consistent as much as you can.

You probably already know why. Most companies use application tracking systems (ATS) to vet potential recruits before handing off the resume to a recruiter.

The ATS is programmed to expect input in a particular format. They’re not always the smartest, and they’re easily confused by unconventional resume examples, such as those with images, text boxes, or multiple columns.

If the ATS can’t parse your document, it will do exactly what you expect: mess things up. And you definitely don’t want it thinking that your email is your current employer.

Stay consistent. Make it easy on the poor ATS. Maximize your chances of making it to the next step.

Name + Contact

How many times have you started a script with “if name==main”? This is basically the same thing.

It’s the only way to start working through the resume template.

Write your name at the top. Below that, write your number and include a professional email address.

The only real variable to consider is whether “Include_LinkedIn == True”. If and only if you check it every day, go ahead and put it. Otherwise, you might miss a recruiter’s message and come to regret it.

Professional Headline

Picture your future boss. They’re probably running on a tight schedule and being asked to do more with less. They need a data engineer to get their project over the finish line.

Picking up your resume, they look down and see the following right below your name:

“Accomplished Data Engineer”

That’s one way to get their attention!

This is what the Professional Headline is all about. Use 3-5 words to tell the person hiring you why YOU are better than any of the other applicants.

Professional Summary

When you want to make lots of data digestible, what do you? You make it into a summary by plugging it into a graph or a chart.

The Professional Summary applies the same concept to your career.

This section will include 2-4 lines that talk about the job you want, your professional experience, and any achievements that you’ve earned. It will include:

  • Desired job title
  • Data engineering skills you have
  • Data engineering achievements and accomplishments (optional)
  • Promotions and awards (optional)

Lines 3-4 are negotiable, depending on your current level of experience and accolades to your name, but the first half is strictly necessary. This lets the hiring manager know who you are and what you’re after.

Once you do progress in your career, you can add to this down the road. In the mean time, though, don’t sweat it too much. It just means that you get more room to talk about your other selling points in the rest of the resume template.

Now that you’ve come this far, you might be thinking that this is a lot of work. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could take it off your hands for you?

The resume professionals at Leet Resumes are here for you. We’ll whip up a perfect data engineering resume for you. And what you pay is entirely up to you.

Work Experience

If the Professional Summary was the at-a-glance graph, the Work Experience section is the entire corpus.

In this part of the resume template, discuss the positions that you’ve held and the most telling experiences from those jobs.

Just keep this one piece of advice in mind. Don’t list your day-to-day tasks. For instance, steer clear of talking about building systems to collect, manage, and convert raw data into usable information.

Take the next step beyond the basics.

Look at the job listing’s requirements. Do you see those daily responsibilities listed there? Do you want your resume to just list them back to the recruiter?

Probably not. You want to impress them by showing what makes you special.

Don’t be shy. Tell them why you’re the best!

Rather than discussing your day-to-day data engineering job requirements, highlight these five important points.

Discuss achievements, accomplishments, and successes

Now is the best time to make yourself stand out from the pack. You only have so many words to dedicate to this cause, so make them count. Begin by highlighting success stories so that the recruiter can see in concrete terms how you will bring value to the team.

Basically, you want them to be blown away that somebody like you would even apply their job.

Employ action verbs

Take this example:

I would have to develop algorithms for normalizing large data sets.

Developed algorithms for normalizing large data sets.

Cut out the chaff and get straight to the wheat. Don’t make your reader trudge through unnecessary words to figure out what you did: developed algorithms.

When you use action verbs, the recruiter will notice the difference. They’ll also see you as an active worker, something that they’re all looking for.

Include numbers

Better data means better decision-making, right?

Put them in the position to make the best decision by giving them good data. Wherever you can, include numbers in your data engineering resume!

For instance, instead of writing that you built a data pipeline between two applications, write that you built a data pipeline that transfers 10TB of data per day between two applications.

If you can find a spot that could benefit from a number, put it in there.

Include promotions

Have you gotten a promotion or two in your time? Now is the perfect time to talk about it!

If you earned a promotion, that means you were recognized for doing a great job. If your previous boss recognized that level of excellence, chances are the recruiter will notice it too.

Promotions also show them that you have a drive to grow and succeed, and who doesn’t want to bring on someone like that?

Write specific dates

You might have a gap or two in your resume, but don’t worry about it so much. Especially don’t think that not including dates won’t go unnoticed.

Not only will they notice this lack of dates, but it’s an immediate red flag. You don’t want them to think you’re hiding something, otherwise you’ll never get an interview.

Education

Acquiring an engineering or computer science degree is no small feat. Time to talk about it.

In addition to including institutions, degrees, and GPAs, you should also include any certifications that you have. This could be the Professional Data Engineer from Google Cloud, the Professional Certificate in Data Engineering from MIT xPRO, or any others you may hold.

Lastly, don’t include any degrees that you didn’t complete unless you’re currently enrolled in the program.

Keywords

The final section of our data engineering resume template is meant to leave a lasting impression. This is your last chance to stand out.

Keywords will demonstrate to the recruiter that hiring you is an amazing opportunity. List hard and soft skills alike, in addition to any awards that you’ve won for data engineering, to show just what a catch you are.

Some recommended keywords are:

  • Build, test, and maintain data pipeline architecture
  • Collaborate
  • Linear algebra
  • Ensure compliance
  • Communicate

This is also the section to narrow in on specific technologies that are your domain of expertise. Programming languages like C++, Python, and Javascript; databases like SQL, NoSQL, and Hadoop; productivity tools like MS office or Jira; and others such as GitHub and AWS are all worth including.

Once they read this, your boss-to-be will recognize their future employee for who they are. They’ll picture you working alongside your future teammates, and they’ll be ready to seal the deal.
