Writing a great cyber security resume

As a cyber security professional, the ability to learn and adapt may be one of the best weapons in your arsenal. The threat landscape constantly changes as technology evolves, and staying on the bleeding edge can be the difference between an expensive breach and a thwarted attack.

Whether you’re in penetration testing, toolchain development, or malware analysis, you know how to enumerate systems, scan for vulnerabilities, and either develop an exploit or a patch—it all depends on which side of the equation you’re on.

From developing best practices to mitigate internal threats to safeguarding an enterprise network against active persistent threats, you’re always assessing the security posture and looking for holes in the armor.

Defending customer data and protecting corporate assets may sound straightforward, but there’s no amount of code that can make up for poor communication. Even the most technical professionals need to work effectively as a team. This is especially important when it comes to crunch time.

Even if you’re great at communicating at work, you could still have a problem with writing an awesome resume. If you’re having a hard time knowing where to start on your resume, don’t stress. Leet Resumes is here to help you!

Since your resume is the first thing that a recruiter or hiring manager sees when you submit an application, you want it to be brief but also powerful. Be clear about what you’re made of, and tell them how you’ve improved cyber security operations in the past.

General Guidelines for writing your resume

Just like clean code uses less lines to achieve the same functionality, you want your cyber security resume to be clean and trim. In this case, less is more.

That’s one reason why you never want to format your resume in paragraphs. Nobody wants to read a dissertation. To get their attention and stand out, your resume should be unique and brief. In as few words as possible, convey why you’re the best one for the job.

You should also keep it simple. Don’t get fancy with the fonts. Just stick to Times New Roman or Arial. There’s also no need for colors, pictures, or confusing additional columns/text boxes.

Not only do these cosmetic additions distract your human readers, but they can also confuse the AI systems that many employers use to sift through incoming resumes. If the applicant tracking system (ATS) can’t parse the formatting on your resume, then your resume may not get very far.

Only put your LinkedIn profile if you’re willing to check the site every day. Recruiters may reach out at any time, and you definitely don’t want to miss a timely opportunity.

Formatting your optimized cyber security resume

Going to hack it yourself? Nice! You’re the expert when it comes to your prior achievements and career goals.

Follow our cyber security resume template, and the writing process will be much easier. This is the basic format:

  • Name + Contact
  • Professional Headline
  • Professional Summary
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Keywords

Now it’s time to dive into the details for each section.

Name + Contact

We’re willing to bet you’ve written a few bash scripts in your day. It may seem obvious, but they all start the same way: #!/bin/bash

Just like the shebang, your resume should always start with your name at the top of the page in slightly bigger letters. Right under it put your phone number and a professional email address. There’s no need to include links to social media.

Professional Headline

This section should be brief. It’s three to five words that convince the reader to keep looking at your resume. Ask yourself how you would explain your cyber security career in just a few words

And don’t make the mistake of just writing your job title. Instead, include a positive adjective as well. For instance, “Relentless Cyber Security Analyst”.

This will grab their attention and bring them into the next part of the resume template.

Professional Summary

This is a continuation of the last part. It quickly introduces the reader to the job you want, the experience you bring, and any achievements or awards you’ve won for your work in cybersecurity. Here’s how to format it:

  • Three or four job titles that you could take
  • Cyber security skills
  • Cyber security accomplishments and achievements (optional)
  • Awards and/or promotions (optional)

The third and fourth lines are optional, depending on your relevant experience and career history, but the first and second are always needed to show why you’re qualified for the job. Showcasing accomplishments, even if it was winning a hackathon while you were a student, will take it one step further to highlight how you’re a great find.

Work Experience

This section of the cybersecurity resume template is where you can really dig into career achievements that set you apart from other applicants. This is a huge point to getting more cyber security job interviews.

Recruiters see tons of resumes that all look the same. They simply list a candidate’s employment history and mundanely repeat all the daily duties and responsibilities that you’d expect. The problem is that this doesn’t actually say anything about how you performed on the job.

A better strategy is to focus on your successes and accomplishments. If you have tangible results to back up your claims, then all the better. The key here is to keep in mind how you brought value and what you’ve done to go above and beyond the call of duty to strengthen your employer’s cyber posture.

Always include lots of numbers

Hone in on specific metrics. If you’ve implemented new solutions to protect a corporate network, say how many. Cite specific results of your work—the most numbers, the better.

Once you’ve finished your resume, go back through it. Look for every opportunity to add a figure.

Bullets start with success verbs

Each bullet point on your cyber security resume should start with a strong action verb, such as detected, protected, or developed. Not only does this help the hiring manager to more quickly digest your resume, but it also showcases your personality as an active, driven, hardworking employee.

Dates are key

Don’t think that you should lie about dates or even omit them if you have a gap or two in your work history. Be honest! These gaps are more common than you might believe, and, especially for an in-demand field like cyber security, they’re the last concern.

Education

In this section, list your educational background. This often takes the form of degrees and institutions, but self-taught hackers or those who graduated from a coding boot-camp can also show off how they learned the trade. IT security is also full of certifications, so if you have a CISSP, CISA, Security+, or any other cert, don’t forget to list that here.

Keywords

The final element of a great cyber security resume is the keywords section. Meant to give you a final chance to make a great impression while also filling your reader in on soft skills, hard skills, and awards you’ve earned, finding the right keywords can be the difference between getting an interview or getting passed by.

Some keywords you might consider including:

  • Threat management
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Authorization and access controls
  • Disaster recovery planning
  • Communication

Don’t forget to also list specific technologies that you’re an expert in. Whether you’re a Kali Linux wizard, a guru of everything Microsoft, or an expert in cloud technology, your future employer wants to hear about. Last but not least, it’s good to also mention your proficiency with standard productivity tools like MS Office or Kanban boards.
