Job Description

The Director of Energy Management is responsible for energy and water management for Ohio University. This position is responsible for reducing campus energy use intensity, water use intensity, and utility-based greenhouse gas emissions at Ohio University. The individual will also be responsible for utility procurement and utility reporting, management of a revolving utility fund, and monitoring energy/water design loads in construction and renovation projects.
  1. Implement operational strategies for energy management: develop and implement operational strategies to reduce energy and water use intensity; provide business case analysis for strategies prior to and post implementation; ensure that energy and flow meters are functioning correctly; utilize funding strategies such as energy rebates, incentives, grants, and energy savings to generate funding for the Energy Management program that can be re-invested in additional energy savings initiatives.
  2. Implement design strategies for energy management: provide technical review of plans and specifications regarding lighting, HVAC and controls of new construction and renovation designs to ensure energy efficiency; support updates to design and construction standards to ensure that energy efficiency is designed into construction and renovation projects.
  3. Serve as a subject matter expert in the development of Ohio University's decarbonization strategy. Lead planning studies to identify opportunities related to decarbonization, and develop an actionable plan to be presented to leadership to achieve the University's carbon goals.
  4. Procure utilities: support electricity, natural gas and renewable energy procurement in collaboration with Purchasing, Legal Affairs, and consultants, and in alignment with the Ohio University Sustainability and Climate Action Plan.
  5. Track and report utility data: monitor, analyze, report and forecast energy/water consumption, costs and savings on a whole-University basis and on a building-by-building basis; provide measurement and verification services to validate energy performance for new construction and renovations; serve as Ohio University's point of contact for energy management issues and data requests.
  6. Supervises multiple student employees.
  7. This individual must understand the operation of utility systems at a large institution, be capable of calculating and analyzing energy and water usage, and have experience with utility contracting.
  8. This individual will work closely with internal and external teams to analyze data and to assist in making decisions related to the operations of the University. Some of the data may be sensitive and/or confidential.
  9. On-site work may be in noisy environments such as mechanical rooms and utility spaces.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Energy Management

Minimum of 8+ years of work-related experience

Minimum of 3 years of management experience

Required: Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to achieve certification/license within 1 year of hire; advanced reasoning, research and analysis skills; management experience; excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to execute good judgment; proficiency in Microsoft Office; valid Driver's license.

Pay Rate

The full salary range for this position is $68,299 - $117,127. The target salary range for this position is $68,299 - $92,205. Salary is commensurate with education and experience, while also considering internal equity.
