Job Description

Trust Advisor III (Estate Settlement Officer)
Comerica's estate settlement unit is team of knowledgeable and experienced professionals, whose goal is to make the estate settlement process as seamless as possible for all concerned. As a Trust Advisor III in Estate Settlement, you will be responsible for serving as an Executor or Personal representative for a book of estate related administrative accounts, and providing support to our client families knowing the period following a death of a loved one can be a difficult time.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Core estate administration:
  • Review, analyze and interpret documents to complete trust and estate administration.
  • Manage estate settlement accounts, in concert with your assigned Estate Analyst (EA), and in accordance with the terms of the governing documents, laws, CMA policies and procedures, and client needs.
  • Evaluate accounts for completeness and accuracy.
  • Monitor and review account transactions.
  • Respond timely to correspondence and client requests.
  • Oversee the opening and closing of estate related administrative accounts.
  • Develop solutions to issues brought forth by clients such as requests for special distributions, fee issues or disputes.
  • In concert with EA, ensure full and complete transfer of assets, their cost basis, and the proper characterization of cash as income or principal.
  • Ensure all tax codes and account administration codes are accurate and oversee tax reporting activities, coordinating with outside CPAs and advisors as well as internal tax partners, as needed.
  • Coordinate with EA and monitor progress as EA ensures completion of primary EA duties including but not limited to:
  • Ensure statements are obtained for DOD valuation purposes and account funding. Ensure system of record is updated accordingly.
  • Coordinate outside asset collection (prepare letters and complete the necessary forms for various institutions). Work with internal/external partners as needed to collect/fund accounts. Follow up to ensure timely funding.
  • Coordinate tangible personal property appraisals and distributions.
  • Complete Asset Valuation Report (drives fees among other things).
  • Prepare/send interested party letters in a timely manner.
  • Track/update beneficiary information.
  • Fee setup and maintenance.
  • Manage bill pay and deposits.
  • Gather and provide necessary tax documents needed for Final 1040 preparation.
  • Setup account distributions


Grow ESU

  • Develop new business through a network of internal and external business partners.
  • Participate in activities geared toward revenue growth of business, for example
    • Secure and track future fiduciary appointments for Comerica.
    • Participate in development and awareness of agent for P.R./Executor campaign.


Risk management:

  • Excel in managing risk, including but not limited to:
  • Timely complete mandatory training.
  • Respond timely and completely to audit requests.
  • Communicate and escalate risk and legal issues to management and legal for awareness.
  • Personally take responsibility to manage risk and legal issues and move issues toward final resolution.
  • Follow all of Comerica's policies and procedures.


Provide excellent client service:

  • Communicate directly with our clients, Financial Advisor partners, and other internal business partners.
  • Provide timely updates on all account related activity and respond quickly to requests.
  • Partner with clients and colleagues in a manner that is professional, respectful, timely and collaborative.
